Calculating scheme water requirements with a water balance

The Chinese philosopher Guan Zhong (720-645 BC) famously said ‘the best return for one year is to grow grains, the best return for ten years is to grow trees, the best return for a lifetime is to educate people’. This potential lifetime impact makes teaching fun and special.

I teach aspects of agricultural water management to bachelor and master students International Land and Water Management. The main topics are:

  • crop water requirements and irrigation
  • water balance
  • yield-evapotranspiration relations
  • drainage and conjunctive water use
  • design of drip and sprinkler irrigation systems
  • reorientations in agricultural water management
